Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina by Michaela DePrince is a must-read because Michaela Deprince is very admirable and relatable. It will make you want to cry both tears of sadness and tears of joy and the memoir can serve as a window and a mirror. Michaela Deprince is very admirable and relatable at the same time. Michaela went through so much when she was living in Sierra Leone, but her experiences in the United States are relatable to many people. She is inspiring because of how hard she worked and how resilient she is. This book will make you want to cry both tears of sadness and joy. Michaela experienced and witnessed so much pain, violence and sorrow, which will make the reader cry and question how people could be so cruel. Then, there are happy milestones while Michaela is on the way to reaching her dreams. This memoir may serve as a mirror if you have had a similar experience. For most, however, including myself, it served as a window. A window into life in another part of the world. A window into the life of a minority and how their experiences are different. From this book, the reader might gain more hope and inspiration. Maybe new information and perspective? Overall this book gives you insight into the world and makes the reader more hopeful like Michaela was. It is a must-read because Michaela DePrince is inspiring, the book can make the reader cry tears of joy and sadness, and the reader can gain perspective and hope from reading the book.
